(Allium ampeloprasum)  Heirloom 'Russian' type of garlic with very mild flavour.   Large, attractive plant to 1.2m producing absolutely huge, creamy white bulbs with 3-5 cloves each.  (Bulbs are approx. 4-5 times the size of regular russian garlic).  Flavour is sweet and nutty.  Ideal for roasting & other cooked dishes.  Easy to peel.

Will grow in most parts of Australia, tending to grow taller with a stronger flavour in the cooler regions.

- harder to peel than hardneck varieties
- stores well (due to several potective outer layers of papery skin)

- well suited to warmer areas with hot summers & mild winters
 
 
HARDNECK (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon)
 
- hard & stiff neck (the stalk that grows up from a garlic) at maturity forming scapes which may also be used in cooking
- mild taste
- easy to peel
- best used soon after harvest (due to only a few protective papery layers)
- mainly large cloves around the outside of the bulb 
- thrive & grow better in cooler areas
