(Lens culinaris)  Also known as 'Black Lentil'.  Small, black, round legume so named as they shimmer when cooked making them look like beluga caviar.  Mild, earthy flavour with soft texture.  Maintain their shape when cooked making them ideal for salads, pilafs, and as a topping on egg, fish & seafood dishes.  Bush 20-40cm tall requiring low support.   May be left to mature and harvested for use as dried legume, or used when still green like snap peas.  Prefers cooler temperatures but not frost.  Does best in temperate areas with low humidity.  450 seeds
