(Sium sisarum)  Asian heirloom with the name being derived from the Middle English "skirwhit" or "skirwort" meaning "white root".  Perennial root vegetable with a sweet, nutty flavor, belonging to the carrot family.  Once popular in Europe, but now less common.  Edible roots with creamy-white, starchy, flesh.  Can be roasted, boiled or fried or roots roasted and ground for use as a coffee substitute.
