Meat meal is a slow-release organic fertilizer. In gardening, it is primarily used as a natural soil amendment to provide plants with a steady supply of nitrogen for leafy growth. 

Uses

• Nutrient Booster: Because it is a byproduct of the meat processing industry, it is packed with essential minerals. It typically contains 6-8% nitrogen, making it an excellent plant food. 

• Soil Conditioner: As the meal breaks down over several weeks, it improves the biological health of your soil by feeding beneficial microorganisms.

• Compost Activator: The high protein and nitrogen content in meat meal can be added to compost piles to speed up the decomposition of carbon-rich materials like dry leaves and twigs.

How to Apply 

• Before Planting: Work the meal directly into the soil or the bottom of planting holes a few weeks before sowing or transplanting.

• Top Dressing: Sprinkle it lightly around the base of established plants and lightly rake it into the top inch of soil.

• Storage and Safety Warning: Because meat meal is made from animal byproducts, its strong scent is highly attractive to carnivores. If you have roaming pets or live in areas with wildlife (like dogs, cats, foxes, or rodents), they may dig up your garden to get to it. To prevent pests, it is best to bury it deeply into the soil rather than leaving it on the surface.
