Molasses acts as a natural soil booster and indirect fertilizer.  It is primarily used to feed beneficial soil microbes (bacteria and fungi), which in turn break down organic matter, improve soil structure, and make vital nutrients more accessible to your plants.

Uses and Benefits

  • Microbe Food: The carbohydrates in molasses provide quick energy for healthy soil bacteria. This boosts overall microbial activity, which enhances nutrient cycling and leads to stronger, more resilient plants.
  • Compost Activation: Adding a diluted molasses mixture to your compost pile provides a fast carbon source. This speeds up the decomposition of organic materials and heats up the pile.
  • Worm Farm Booster: Diluted molasses fed to a worm bin feeds both the worms and their beneficial microbes, resulting in faster waste breakdown and richer castings.
  • Pest Deterrent: When mixed with water and a mild liquid soap, molasses can be used as a foliar spray. The sugars make plant leaves less appealing to sap-sucking insects like aphids and mites.

How to Apply

  • Soil Drench: Mix 60–80 ml (approx. 1/3 cup) of molasses per 9 L watering can and apply it to your garden beds each month.
  • Compost Tea: Add a splash of molasses when brewing compost tea to energize microbial growth.
  • Foliar Spray: Mix 1 tablespoon of molasses and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap into 1 L of water, and mist it onto plant leaves every 2 to 3 weeks.
